Anti Wet Sump Oil Pipe Tap With Switch - Magneto or Coil Ignition Systems

A solution to a frequent problem of wet sumping.
On many of the older classic bikes, the oil pump and/or non-return ball-valve is worn, or leaks, causing the oil tank to gradually drain all the oil into the engine sump, over time. This can be a problem with starting, causing hydraulic lock and resulting in severe damage. Fitting a tap in the oil feed supply line is a solution, however the major problem is remembering to turn the tap on before starting the engine.

This newly developed tap has an integral switch fitted so you can wire it in to the ignition to prevent starting without the tap being turned on.

Available in two types - please selection option
MAG TYPE: Magneto ignition engines - closed circuit - Tap OFF (to earth the magneto).
COIL TYPE: Coil ignition engines - closed circuit - Tap ON (to connect the coil to power).

Internal bore diameter of tap inlet: 1/4" (6.3mm)
Suit 3/8" bore pipe, but will fit very tight into a 5/16" ID pipe
Comes with PTFE tape fitted to the threads, so you should be able to just fit and use.

Mag Type explained: Simply use the two wires on the switch - one to earth (the frame) and one to the magneto or kill button. To stop the engine you use the normal earth/kill button. Switching the oil tap off earths the magneto thereby preventing you from starting the engine. When the tap is turned on again, the switch breaks the circuit to earth, allowing the magneto to spark.

Coil Type explained: Simply use the two wires on the switch to interrupt the power supply to your ignition system. This can be wired in series with the coil low tension wire, or a power feed wire to the ignition switch (care with amperage use, maybe do this with a relay) or a power feed to the electronic ignition unit.

Handy Hints:
Some photos show the A7/A10 example we fitted in the workshop. We cut off the bend at the engine end from the original pipe and used that, together with a 90 degree bend for the tank end. Took about an hour in total.

Ignition Coil motorcycles: If you are not confident with wiring up the tap switch to the ignition system, another solution is to use the MAG type switch and connect it using a feed to the horn on the motorcycle (one wire to live feed, one wire to the horn). This way, when the switch is OFF and you turn the ignition on, the horn will blare at you, possibly resulting in brown trousers, but these are easier to change than main bearings!!
Another solution for Ignition Coil bikes: use the Mag type switch and connect one wire to earth and the other wire to the feed side of the ignition coil. When the tap is closed you are effectively earthing the coil so you will not be able to get a spark.
